HoYoverse is once again giving players a reason to log in outside of Teyvat with a new Genshin Impact web event that grants free Primogems. As reported by Game Rant, the event titled “Hey, you! Pick a side!” is live from May 13 to May 20, and gives players an easy way to collect 30 Primogems by participating in a light-hearted character showdown between Ajaw and Cacucu.
“Hey, You! Pick a Side!” Event Details
The web event centers on Ajaw, the loyal dragon companion of Kinich, and Cacucu, the quirky saurian sidekick of Ifa. Players are asked to choose one of the two and create a post through Genshin Impact’s official web event interface. This post generates a personalized link, which then directs users to a redemption page where they can claim their 30 Primogems.
To successfully redeem the reward, players must be:
- Logged into the correct HoYoverse account
- Using the event link generated after choosing their character
- Participating before the event ends on May 20, 2025
While 30 Primogems may not be game-changing, they’re a welcome bonus—especially for players saving up for upcoming banners like the rumored debut of Skirk or the continuation of Natlan’s main story arc.
Ajaw vs. Cacucu: Who Are These Characters?
This event also serves to highlight the growing lore surrounding Genshin Impact’s Natlan region, particularly two of its most charming new additions.
🐉 Ajaw – The Almighty Dragonlord
Ajaw is introduced as the summoned entity of Kinich, the 5-star Dendro character hailing from Natlan. His lore is steeped in ancient history—once one of thirteen dragonlords who ruled over pre-modern Natlan. According to the story, he is the sole survivor of the original dragonlords, having been imprisoned in a phlogiston bracelet deep within Natlan’s ruins. Kinich discovered and freed Ajaw, leading to their bond as one of the Pyro nation’s most iconic duos.
Ajaw appears during Kinich’s Elemental Burst—Hail to the Almighty Dragonlord—and has quickly gained popularity due to his regal aesthetic and imposing presence.
🦎 Cacucu – The Cheerful Clinic Assistant
On the other side is Cacucu, the dinosaur-like companion of Ifa, a 4-star character introduced in Version 5.6. Cacucu is anything but menacing despite his appearance. This lovable Qucusaurus works alongside Ifa in his medical practice and can understand human speech, further solidifying his fan-favorite status.
Cacucu appears when Ifa uses his Elemental Skill: Airborne Disease Prevention, often bringing humor and charm to battles. Players still have time to recruit Ifa and Cacucu before their banner ends on May 27, 2025.
Primogems and Gacha Strategy
Primogems remain the most valuable resource in Genshin Impact, used to pull for characters and weapons in the game’s gacha system. While HoYoverse regularly provides Primogems through commissions, events, and Spiral Abyss challenges, web events like these offer easy, low-effort opportunities to pad your stash.
While 30 Primogems won’t get you a full pull, stacking rewards from various events can easily net you several free wishes over the course of a patch cycle. Combine this with Daily Commissions, mail rewards, and event bonuses, and it becomes clear why paying attention to minor events like this matters—especially with Skirk and potential new regions like Nod-Krai on the horizon.
Fan Engagement and Community Choice
Beyond rewards, the “Pick a Side” event taps into the fandom’s love for character lore and rivalries. Both Ajaw and Cacucu have compelling backstories, and HoYoverse is using this event to build emotional attachment to these new companions—something they’ve done successfully in the past with pets like Guppy (Furina’s orbs) or Guoba (Xiangling’s summon).
The Genshin community is already divided on social media, with players championing their chosen creature. Regardless of which side wins, HoYoverse is clearly succeeding in making Natlan’s characters stick in players’ minds—ensuring that upcoming banners have emotional weight to match their gameplay appeal.
Don’t miss out on your free Primogems—participate in the web event by May 20 and get your rewards!
