A new elemental reaction is coming to Genshin Impact, and it’s something the community has been anticipating for years: Cryo and Dendro finally interact.
According to a leak covered by Game Rant, the upcoming Version 5.6 will introduce a brand-new reaction involving Cryo and Dendro, debuting initially in the Imaginarium Theater. This marks the first time Cryo will officially interact with Dendro—two years after the release of Sumeru and the Dendro element.
The reaction is already generating buzz among theorycrafters and players alike for its unique mechanics, powerful damage amplification, and game-changing potential—not just in the Theater, but possibly across all of Teyvat.
Cryo + Dendro: Finally a Reaction Worth Waiting For?
Until now, Cryo has been one of the few elements that didn’t interact with Dendro, frustrating many players who wanted better synergy between their favorite characters. Dendro users like Alhaitham, Tighnari, or Baizhu have been locked out of potential team comps with Cryo characters like Ayaka, Shenhe, or Eula.
This new leak changes everything.
The reaction—temporarily exclusive to the Imaginarium Theater—will apply when enemies are affected by both Cryo and Dendro. It spawns a status effect called Frost Thorn, which deals Cryo and Dendro DoT (damage over time) and provides a 45% damage bonus to those elements while active.
But it gets even more complex—with two unique paths depending on how Electro is applied.
Two Paths for the Cryo-Dendro Reaction
Once Frost Thorn is applied to an enemy, two things can happen depending on whether Electro damage is added:
Path 1 – Electro Conversion
- The DoT converts to Electro damage
- Enemies receive reduced Electro resistance
This path enhances Electro teams, making it potentially valuable for units like Yae Miko, Raiden Shogun, or Sethos. It shifts the elemental priority mid-reaction, opening up unique synergy potential across multiple roles.
Path 2 – Damage Amplification + EM Buff
- Frost Thorn stops attacking
- Enemies receive +135% damage from Cryo, Dendro, Electro, and Physical sources
- Characters receive +300 Elemental Mastery
This second path is particularly exciting for reaction-based teams, especially Dendro-centric builds like Aggravate, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon. The massive EM boost also supports characters like Nahida, Kaveh, and Kuki Shinobu, who rely on EM scaling for damage and healing.
It even benefits Physical damage—an archetype that has been out of the spotlight for many patches.
Why This Reaction Matters
Players have already voiced strong support for this reaction, calling it one of the most creative and useful elemental mechanics Genshin has introduced in a while. If this reaction becomes permanent, it could revitalize underused elements and characters—particularly Cryo, Electro, and Physical.
Some of the potential implications include:
- Making Cryo more relevant outside of Freeze teams
- Boosting Physical DPS characters like Eula, Razor, or Freminet
- Adding more synergy between Dendro and Electro, already a strong pairing
- Encouraging the use of characters like Shenhe, Yaoyao, or Cyno in creative new ways
Players hope the Imaginarium Theater will serve as a testing ground for this system before HoYoverse fully integrates it into the overworld and Spiral Abyss. Many are speculating that HoYoverse is waiting to see how both reaction paths perform before choosing a permanent implementation.
Will Cryo Finally Get Its Meta Moment?
Cryo has historically been pigeonholed into Freeze-based team comps and Melt reactions, with few opportunities for flexibility. This new interaction gives Cryo fresh utility, especially in team comps where Freeze isn’t viable.
More importantly, it signals that HoYoverse is finally addressing a long-standing design gap: Dendro’s inability to interact with Cryo. As the game continues to evolve, these new reactions could be the key to future character design, team building, and combat strategies.’
